S2. DESIGN STUDIO is an architecture and interior design studio comprised of a team of professionals led by architect Sara Shrem. The firm was founded in 2012 in Mexico City. The studio’s objective is to create projects integrating architecture and interior design. Through careful analysis, creative, cutting-edge, and functional ideas are developed, resulting in harmonious spaces. This is achieved by integrating materials, textures, lighting, forms, furniture, and other elements to create the perfect balance.
Architect Sara Shrem was born in 1987 in Mexico City. She earned a degree in architecture and urban planning from the Universidad Iberoamericana. During that time, she also studied for six months at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, one of the world’s most prestigious art and design schools, located in Jerusalem, Israel. She worked at Ideurban, where she participated in several projects, including Blend Design Mexico.

When you were a kid, what did you dream of becoming? Did any of those childhood ambitions lead you to where you are today?
Sara Shrem: As a child, my fascination with the infinite expanses of space led me to dream of becoming an astronaut. The boundless cosmos, with its colors, shapes, and endless expansion, inspired a deep admiration for cosmic structures and natural beauty. This childhood desire to explore the unknown and uncover the secrets of the universe was intertwined with my perception of the cosmic wonders, inspiring me to appreciate the majestic scenery that unfolds before us.
Was there a specific turning point or experience when you realized that design was your true calling?
SS: I have always been a creative and perceptive person, passionate about the arts from a young age. My fascination with architecture arose when I realized the powerful ability of spaces to evoke emotions and unique experiences. It was at that moment that I understood I wanted to be an architect, to design environments that positively impact people, inspiring them and enhancing their quality of life by creating meaningful and functional spaces. Additionally, my attention to detail allows me to approach each project with precision and care, ensuring that every element contributes significantly to the overall experience of the space.
Which designer or piece of work inspires you?
SS: I find inspiration in Kelly Wearstler for her daring experimentation, meticulous attention to detail, and her knack for creating impactful and memorable environments. Her focus on individuality and personal expression through design motivates me to seek originality and innovation in my own architectural projects. Kelly Wearstler is a design icon who shows that there are no limits to creativity and that interior design can be a form of art that transcends the conventional.
How would you describe your design philosophy? Has it evolved over time, and if so, how?
SS: My architectural design philosophy revolves around the harmonious blend of functionality, creativity, and aesthetics, enriched by meticulous attention to detail. I believe that each element in an architectural project serves a specific purpose and contributes significantly to the overall experience of the space. Furthermore, I firmly believe that architectural spaces are not just physical structures, but also true extensions of the people who inhabit them.
In my projects, I tend to explore architectural themes such as sustainability, energy efficiency, integration with the natural environment, adaptability to changing user needs, innovation in the use of materials and technologies, and appreciation of local history and culture. I believe that architecture has the power to influence people’s quality of life by creating spaces that are not only visually appealing but also foster interaction, inspiration, and emotional well-being.
Which of your projects are you most proud of, and what makes them stand out for you?
SS: I take great pride in my first project in Miami, located in one of the top residential areas of the city. This project holds particular significance as it was my first venture outside of Mexico. Furthermore, it was the third house I designed for this particular client, adding an extra layer of achievement to the successful completion of the project.
In your opinion, what is the most significant challenge facing the design world today? How do you think designers should respond to it?
SS: I think that the most pressing issue in the interior design and architecture is the focus on sustainability, well-being, and emotional design. Designers are increasingly incorporating elements that promote the physical and mental well-being of individuals within interior spaces, aiming to create environments that enhance comfort, relaxation, and positive emotions while also being environmentally sustainable. This holistic approach considers the impact of design on individuals’ health and emotions, shaping the future of interior design towards spaces that nurture both people and the planet.
What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your career?
SS: Trust in your creativity and embrace risks in your designs for originality, and stay updated with trends and technologies, build strong collaborations, and never stop learning as a new architect or studio in today’s dynamic industry.
