As a kid, what did you answer when asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
I always wanted to be an architect from a young age. I loved the idea of shaping spaces and creating environments that could make people feel something.
Which designer and/or piece of work inspires you? Why?
There are so many! One designer I always reference is Charlotte Perriand. Her work embodies such a beautiful balance of form and function, and I admire how she infused a modern sensibility into timeless materials.
How would you describe your design philosophy?
I believe in creating spaces that feel timeless. I’m not interested in trends—what matters is the craftsmanship, the way things function in a home, and the story behind the pieces. It’s about the long-term value of a design, how it will endure, and how it will make people feel for years to come.
Which of your projects or products are you most proud? Why?
There are so many I’m proud of, but I think one of the projects closest to my heart are the books I published, Bibliostyle, Surf Shack, and Mountain House. It was a real passion project, and it allowed me to share my design philosophy with a wider audience. It’s a labor of love, and I’m so proud of how they have turned out.
What is the most pressing issue in the design world today?
The most important issue is respecting the origin of design. As designers, we must be mindful of how we repurpose and take inspiration from others. Original work should always be celebrated, and the people behind it deserve to be honored for their craft. It’s easy to get lost in the mass market, but we have to remember who the real creators are.
What’s now?
We have some exciting projects on the horizon! We’re working on homes in Aspen, Santa Barbara, and East Los Angeles. Each one is completely different, which has made it both challenging and incredibly fun. I’m also experimenting with new materials and approaches to keep pushing the boundaries of what I can create.
