A Swedish brand that actually produces in Sweden, String Furniture values the timeless quality of paradigm-shifting innovations—the String shelving system first developed by Kajsa and Nisse Strinning in 1949, for example. Deriving their brand’s name from this iconic Midcentury Modern concept and upholding its legacy, entrepreneurs Peter Erlandsson and Pär Josefsson are now commemorating the design’s 75th anniversary.
Since founding the Limhamn, Sweden-based company in 2004, the duo has worked with contemporary talents, namely in house designers Anna von Schewen and Björn Dahlström, to develop a number of reinterpretations and re-editions—building on the revolutionary, all metal, and modular storage system’s stylistically transcendent characteristics. “Taking on a phenomenon like String there’s a risk of focusing too much on the obvious attributes. In this case, the ‘strings’ of the wall panels,” says Dahlström. “But if we just developed a lot of products based on a 5-millimeter metal wire, the outcome would feel quite bland.
One of the first iterative concepts they developed was a folding table with meticulously engineered hinges that pulled much more from String’s implicit industry DNA than its explicit aesthetic. “Björn and I have an ongoing dialogue about String, and share a true ambition to develop the concepts behind the brand,” von Schewen says. “At the same time, we’ve learned not to lose our focus on quality by continuously creating new things.”
Today, String Furniture manufactures the more compact Pocket shelf variant, the especially dexterous Museum Collection, and the Pira G2 design. Products in other furniture typologies include the especially sturdy six-legged Works table and the Relief set of drawers. Whether a limited run special edition or the original shelving system, String Furniture produces exclusively in Sweden using 95-percent recycled materials. The intent, however, is for its durable components to become heirloom pieces and be passed down through the generations.
