Founded almost 8 years ago, Clive Lonstein’s design studio is comprised of experienced and creative design professionals. Their recent projects include a multi-story boutique development project in Manhattan, a privately run airport in Seattle, and private residences in Aspen, the Bahamas, and the Hamptons. His work has been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, Wallpaper Magazine, House and Garden UK, Architectural Digest Italia, Galerie Magazine, and L’Officiel.

Located in a historic McKim, Mead & White building in downtown Manhattan, the design studio houses a rich library of materials from which to draw inspiration, whether it is an alpine estate modeled after an English country house or the sleek and modern lines of a Miami office.

Prior to opening his own firm, Lonstein served as Design Director at Studio Sofield where he worked on high-end residential, retail, and hospitality projects and with commercial clients ranging from Tom Ford to Boucheron. He subsequently served as a Vice President at Tiffany & Co. where he oversaw the firm’s in-house architecture and design studio.
Lonstein, a native of South Africa, received a Masters of Architecture with distinction from Harvard University. The combination of his architectural training and his background in fine art continues to inform his design and his particular use of form, color and materials.

Architecture!

Which designer and/or piece of work inspires you? Why?
The Seagram Building in New York is a major inspiration for me. It combines a sense of luxury with its rich bronze sheen, all while embracing a minimalist, almost austere architectural approach. It’s a perfect balance of rigor and refinement.

How would you describe your design philosophy?
Clive Lonstein’s design studio is known for its innovative approach to rich minimalist interiors and reductive architecture. Based in Manhattan, the studio draws inspiration from an extensive library of materials and influences from travel, art, fashion, and nature.

Which of your projects or products are you most proud? Why?
Southampton stands out to me. It’s a great mix of elements that feels very rooted in its location and context. The materials and design were carefully chosen to complement the landscape and atmosphere, giving it a distinct, cohesive sense of place.

What is the most pressing issue in the design world today?
AI is definitely something to watch. It’s beginning to shape the way we approach design, offering exciting possibilities for efficiency and creativity. But it’s still evolving, and I think it’ll play a huge role in how we move forward as designers.
