Bernhardt Design: Automatic by Cory Grosser
Inspired by Linus, the philosophical character in the 20th century cartoon “Peanuts,” designer Cory Grosser conceived a very 21st century chair. Similar to Linus’ blanket, Grosser’s Automatic chair will go anywhere, anytime—it really is automatic. Grosser’s rationale was to design a chair that instinctually moves along with us, wherever that may be. Automatic will debut in November 2021.
“Automatic needed to be welcoming, so I started by sketching approachable forms with soft edges. Next, an integrated pull strap and spring-loaded casters were added, enabling it to be moved around as easily as Linus’ blanket. To add visual interest, I designed an exterior shell that cradles the soft cushions, allowing combinations of textures and colors on the final product,” states Grosser. Thoughtfully, he continues, “Automatic should help us feel more comfortable as we transition to a new normal.”
