Sampler by Chilewich
Meet Sampler, Chilewich’s show-stopping spring debut and a 2023 NYCxDesign Awards honoree.
Available as table mats and rugs, this weave is inspired by the samplers that were used to learn and demonstrate darning, a sewing technique for repairing holes or worn areas in fabric by replicating the structure of the original material. Dating back centuries, these samplers typically covered small pieces of cloth in darning “blocks” of various weaves.
The colorful nature of darning samplers was by design. A favored mix of blue, green, red, and yellow yarns helped to make intricacies visible and show the weaver’s skill. In Chilewich’s twenty-first century interpretation, paired rectangles come together, introducing a distinctive weave as they overlap.
