Synonymous with shelter and strength, natural wood is the perfect balance of form and function, style and substance. For over 20 years moncer floors have been distinguished by broad planks, fine grains and hand-finished surfaces, inviting a natural elegance to any space.
Renowned for producing bespoke finishes that enhance the rich, textural beauty of sustainably sourced woods, Moncer is crafting exceptional wood floors for those passionate about quality, authenticity and naturalistic design.
We chatted with Spencer Crouch to learn more about moncer.
Who founded moncer and when? Founded over 20 years ago, our company has humble beginnings. My father grew up on a fruit farm in Western Canada’s Okanagan Valley and spent summers working at a remote fishing and hunting lodge on the west coast. Subsequent summer jobs with the forest service and reforestation contractors provided a deep rooted connection and appreciation for nature. Over his professional career he’s represented European brands in varied industries from sporting goods to construction equipment, with a focus on quality production and innovation. It was his discovery of several niche wood flooring producers that brought his professional career full circle to his childhood roots.
The name moncer is a derivative of Monte + Spencer. It encapsulates our understanding of collaboration and ‘sum of all parts’ approach. We understand the importance of working with our partners and our customers to provide solutions for amazing projects. That the individual pieces, when dutifully cared for, can create something truly amazing.
What was the inspiration behind founding it? The inspiration for moncer came from wanting to share our passion for quality and nature with like-minded designers and architects. Working with those who care deeply about the way in which products are made, as well as the materials and people that create them.
How do you approach your collaborations with interior designers and architects? What makes moncer’s process different? We don’t offer a catalogue or product list so that each of our projects begin with a conversation instead of a selection. We encourage our clients to share their vision for the space; working with us to craft a floor that reflects the inspiration for the project.
moncer describes itself as a curator of flooring. Can you tell us what this means to you? Supplying floors is a business; curating authentic European wood surfaces is a passion. From custom formats to hand-mixed colour matches, we aren’t just providing a floor. We’re working with our clients to craft the foundation of their creative vision. By collaborating with architects and designers we curate exceptional, truly bespoke floors for some of the world’s most cutting edge architectural & design projects.
What’s the company’s selection process? We have our own guiding principles as a company and we partner with people who support and live those principles themselves. Our suppliers have been doing this work a long time and their dedication to quality, sustainability, and social responsibility is aligned with ours.
We are driven by innovation and excited to explore new possibilities by partnering with teams who are bringing together traditional woodworking techniques and leading technology. However, that is perpetually balanced by our commitment to our clients. We are solution focused and keen to push the envelope, but never at the expense of quality or our client’s satisfaction.
How are your products different from others on the market? moncer floors are sourced exclusively from certified & sustainably harvested timbers. Our unique and time-tested 3-layer construction provides exceptional strength and durability, allowing our products to withstand demanding technical requirements. An oil finish then protects and nourishes the surface, keeping the floors beautiful for years to come.
However, what really sets moncer apart is our capacity for innovation. Our clients are never limited to a set of standard offerings. Through the thoughtful union of traditional woodworking techniques and modern technology the possibilities are nearly endless. Colour, texture, wood species, patterns, lengths, widths, every aspect of a floor can be customized to an architect or designer’s exact specifications. All without compromising the quality and longevity that our clients expect from a moncer floor.
Share a bit about how sustainability plays into your work. All moncer products are PEFC and/or FSC-certified and harvested from responsibly managed old-growth forests. We prioritize sustainable and socially responsible practices in every aspect of our business. Every step from harvesting to producing long-lasting, durable floors is a reflection of our appreciation for Mother Nature.
We believe quality to be a tenant of sustainability. A company that promotes sustainability must craft products that last, promoting longevity and the enduring nature of authentic materials.
What products are you specifically excited about right now? We recently released 2 new collections; Atelier Shrunk and Premium Antico. These hand-crafted surfaces offer unique textures that celebrate the beauty of natural wood. Atelier’s air dried surface undulates around each knot and grain to enhance these (im)perfect characteristics, bringing the inherent texture of the wood forward. Antico, Atelier’s refined counterpart, is brushed and sawn to create a contemporary texture that mimics organic textiles like linen.
Can you share details on any projects you’re particularly proud of? We’re incredibly proud to have been a part of some truly special projects in recent years. Our floors have been selected for the personal homes of several renowned designers and architects which is such an amazing honor. Large scale institutional projects, like art galleries and corporate head offices, show tremendous trust in us to craft a floor that will remain beautiful and durable in busy, high-visibility spaces. We’ve also been a part of some uniquely innovative projects that push the boundaries of where wood “should” go, producing floors, walls, and even ceilings for yachts & boat houses all over the world.
Anything else you’d like to add about moncer and its future plans? We are thrilled to have been a part of ICFF in 2024 and to have connected with creative teams across 3 continents. We are unbound by geography, so it’s a thrill to provide solutions across the globe. We presently have a varied portfolio of projects on the go and are excited to see what opportunities our amazing clients will continue to challenge us with!
