Dean Levin is the Founder and Principal of 22RE, a Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary practice for architecture and design founded in 2021. Drawing from his multi-cultural worldview and background in art and architecture, Levin established the studio with a distinct, hyper-refined visual language. The studio approaches the design process with a deliberate exploration of morphology and materiality, rooted in global historical influences.
Tapping into his experiences across art, architecture and design, Levin ensures meticulous attention to every detail, from conceptual design to the built environment. Each element is crafted with precision, honoring craftsmanship and demonstrating a commitment to the artistry of translating concepts into reality. Further enriched by his extensive travels across Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe, Levin’s portfolio reflects a deep respect for modernism as a uniquely American export and architectural philosophy. In 2024, Levin and 22RE were honored on Wallpaper*’s USA 400 list and named among AN Interiors’ Top 50 Architects and Designers.
As a kid, what did you answer when asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Growing up, I wanted to design race cars for the simple reason that they looked cool and went fast. I’ve always been into cars, and as I grew older, I became more interested in how they merge design and ingenuity – combining form and function at the highest level.
Which designer and/or piece of work inspires you? Why?
The Fondazione Prada, designed by OMA under the direction of Rem Koolhaas. It pushes the boundaries of blending old and new in contemporary architecture. Koolhaas used a distinct material palette and implemented a modernist and deconstructivist way of thinking. I’ve always been inspired by how successful he was in executing his vision.
How would you describe your design philosophy?
I have a modernist eye and like to reference the past to answer today’s questions. Our studio brings a hyper-refined approach to each project, deliberately exploring morphology and materiality through a lens rooted in global historical influences. For me, it’s all about enhancing quality of life and creating spaces that are both functional and beautiful.
Who are three designers you follow on Instagram?
Halleroed, Pierre Yovanovitch and John Pawson
Give us some context about where you live: How long you’ve been there and how does it influence your work?
I grew up in Los Angeles and live here now, though I spent 12 years in New York City while pursuing my art career. Both cities have shaped my perspective as a designer. Having spent the majority of my life in Los Angeles, I’ve always had a level of exposure to modernism, being surrounded by the likes of Frank Gehry, Ray Kappe and Rudolph Schindler. This environment also pushes me to experiment with some of the defining elements of Los Angeles design, such as natural materials and light.
Was there a moment when you realized you wanted to be a designer? If so, what was it?
It’s all been a journey. I initially wanted to design cars, then become a fashion designer, but my mom encouraged – forced – me to consider architecture school. After my first year, I fell in love with it. That trajectory slowly evolved into an art career, which became a springboard back to design. They’re all interconnected, so it was more of a continuous path than a singular, defining moment.
Which of your projects or products are you most proud of? Why?
Right now, I’d say Departamento. It was fun working on a project where my passions for fashion and design could come together. We had the creative freedom to experiment, and many of my initial ideas and concepts were able to come to life.
What is the most pressing issue in the design world today?
Aesthetics.
